Remembering Them: A Treasure trove of WW1 memorabilia in Sandstone WA

Remembering Them: Memorabilia marks WWI contribution War medals and badges, which belonged to William Edward de Courcy Lefroy, will be on display at Sandstone Library from 14th November 2017 for a year. Picture: Margie Lundy A treasure trove of World War I memorabilia will be on display at the Sandstone Library for the official opening of the Goldfields To Battlefields: Brothers In Arms exhibition until. The exhibition, which is open until November next year, will display a range of artefacts donated by the families of local soldiers who served in the Great War. It is one of 32 exhibitions across the State comprising the Lotterywest-funded Remembering Them project, which tells the local stories of rural, remote and regional WA communities and commemorates their wartime contributions. Medals, badges and good luck charms will be displayed, along with other collectors’ items including a gift box containing cigarettes and chocolate that was given by Princess Mary to all soldiers serving in the Imperial Forces in 1914. Also on display will be a “Dead Man’s Penny” — a round memorial plaque sent to the next of kin of soldiers who died in the war. MGAWA and the WA Museum: share, reuse & recycle MGAWA Free-cycle is a free service helping WA museums to share, reuse & recycle. Museums Galleries Australia WA and the Western Australian Museum have been ‘free-cycling’ old display cases, cabinets, tables, mini fridges you name it in an attempt to reduce the amount going into landfill and give small and regional museums a chance to pick up some fantastic museum pieces. We’ve run 3 rounds of the program in 2017 and had a huge response, from as far away as the Upper Gascoyne, Katanning, Cunderdin, York, Northam, Dowerin, Boddington, Kojonup and Guildford. The Museum of Natural History in Guildford, now has a display case of their  taxidermist work and the Cunderdin Museum was able to recycle this comfortable chair (pictured), already been reclaimed by the office cat.
